Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard REVIEW
As provided by Goodreads, here is its synopsis:
Graceling meets The Selection in debut novelist Victoria Aveyard's sweeping tale of seventeen-year-old Mare, a common girl whose once-latent magical power draws her into the dangerous intrigue of the king's palace. Will her power save her or condemn her?
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood--those with common, Red blood serve the Silver- blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.
To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard--a growing Red rebellion--even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.
Sounds interesting, huh?
Non-spoilery SUMMARY OF MY SPOILERY REVIEW
Read this. Read this now or you will regret it. I'm giving it five over five because seriously, why will I not. This is one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Has the right amounts of swoon and mystery and guts. I'd recommend it to people who like GoT, The Selection, Graceling, Divergent, etc. Read it. Here is a link to the epub version of it: http://tuebl.ca/books/101615
Beware: Review will contain spoilers.
i. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN THE BOOK AND WHY?
When it comes to favourites, I have a lot. But Maven really touched my heart because he was this misunderstood second-son and also the least favourite of his father, the king. I really thought that the reason he joined the Scarlet Guard was to free the people from his father's tyrannical ways and to remove the border between Silvers and Reds. I really thought that he was perfect for Mare, and I preferred him more than Cal! But boy, was I wrong. He turned out to be an ally of his evil mother, Queen Elara. Then they teamed up to kill the king so that Maven could get the crown and they could rule Norta together. He's undoubtedly a man-version of his mother. I WAS REALLY, REALLY convinced, like, at one point I was 'OMG MAVEN WHY DID YOU YELL AT YOUR MOTHER YOU MUST REALLY LOVE MARE'
But sadly, ...
But other than being evil, Maven is very intelligent. He's a quick thinker, and could get his way out of everything.
ii. What's your favourite part of the book?
The queenstrial, of course. This was where I concluded that this book really has a dash of The Selection. In the Selection, thirty five girls fight for the prince and to be the next princess of Illeá. Same here. Ladies from different houses (families, like GoT) compete to see who's the most powerful of them all, by showcasing their different abilities (oooh, Magnetron and Oblivion) Then the most powerful will rule Norta alongside king-to-be Cal.
I really liked this book because the characters were so.. real. I can feel them and their emotions. I didn't have trouble entering this world because they were so.. imaginable? I don't know the proper term for it. Going back, it's also a great book because it had the right amounts of action, romance, blood, guts, sacrifice, and mystery that will keep you turning the pages.
But the only thing it lacked was a little bit of humor. Why so serious? But I guess with a plot so action-filled, it's not very much appropriate to put humor, I guess.
